appointment, plans, reservation, promise 의 차이

 

 

우리말로는 약속이라는 말이 영어에서는 쓰이는 상황에 따라 어휘가 달라집니다.

맹세 성격의 약속과 시간 약속 할 때 쓰이는 어휘가 각각 다릅니다.

 

  * make an appointment 은 의사(doctor), dentist, 회계사, 변호사, 비즈니스 관계자 등과 시간 약속을 잡을 때 사용

an arrangement for a meeting at an agreed time and place, for a particular purpose. 

The word appointment is not used for meetings among friends or family members.

In most cases, an appointment is a meeting that a person has with a professional such as a doctor, dentist, lawyer or accountant. 

 

I'd like to make an appointment with Dr. Dennis. (데니스 박사님과 예약(시간약속)하고 싶은데요)

What time would you like to come in ? (언제 오시겠습니까?)  

 

Dennis made an appointment with his doctor at 2 in the afternoon. (데니스는 오후 2시에 주치의와 약속을 잡았다)   

I'd like to make an appointment for my medical checkup. (건강검진 예약하고 싶은데요)

I'm calling to make an appointment. (예약하려고 전화했는데요)

I'm calling to cancel my appointment. (예약 취소하려고 전화했어요) 

  * 친구끼리 하는 약속에는 plans 를 사용. plan 이 아니고 plans 임

Do you have any plans for tonight? (너 오늘밤에 약속있니?)  

Nothing. Why? (없어. 왜?)

How about having dinner with me, then? (그럼, 나랑 저녁 같이 할래?)

OK. What time shall we make it? (좋아. 몇시에 만날까?)

How about seven? (7시 어때?)

That would be fine. (그거 좋겠다)

 

Michael, are you coming to Mina's birthday party this Saturday? (마이클, 이번주 토요일 민아 생일 파티에 올거니?)

I don't think I can. (나 못갈거 같아)

Why not? (왜?)

I actually have some other plans. (사실은 다른 약속이 좀 있거든) 

Something came up. I can't make it. (무슨 일이 생겨서 못나겠어)

 

Do you have any plans for this weekend? (이번 주말에 약속 있어?)

Of course. I'm scheduled to go fishing. (물론이지. 낚시하러 갈거야) 

 

  * make a reservation 은 비행기(airplane), 식당(restaurant), 극장 좌석, 호텔 등을 예약할 때 사용

I'd like to make a reservation at 7 pm for four people. (7시에 4명 예약하고 싶네요)

I'd like to make a reservation for tonight. (오늘밤 예약하고 싶은데요)
Ok, for how many people?  (몇분 이십니까?)
Four. Can we have a table by the window? (4명입니다. 창가쪽으로 가능한가요?)
I'm sure that can be arranged. (그렇게 하겠습니다) 

 

Do you have a reservation? (예약하셨나요?)
I made a reservation under the name of Dennis. Party of four. (데니스라는 이름으로 예약했습니다. 4명이요)
 

I'd like to make a reservation. (예약하고 싶은데요)  

Do you have any room on July 12th? (7월 12일에 방 있나요?)
We're fully booked. (방이 꽉 찼습니다) Yes, we do. Can I have your name, please? (네 있습니다. 성함이 어떻게 되시죠?)

 

I'd like to make a reservation for a flight to New York. (뉴욕행 비행기 예약하고 싶은데요)

 

  * make a date 는 이성과 만나는 시간약속에 사용 

I'd like to make a date with you. (나 당신이랑 데이트하고 싶어요) 

I have a date with my girlfriend. (냐 여자친구랑 약속있어)

I had a date with him. (나 그 남자랑 데이트 했어)

I have a date with him tonight. (오늘밤 그 남자랑 데이터 하기로 했어)

I had a happy date with her. (그 여자랑 즐거운 데이터를 했어)

  * promise 는 맹세 성격의 약속(다짐)입니다. (A promise is something that a person vows to do.) 

    남녀사이에 다짐하는 약속, 술먹고 들어온 남편한테 술 다신 먹지 안겠다고 다짐받는 약속, 친구사이에 다짐하는 약속 등 

Promise me you will not waste your time. (나랑 약속해. 시간을 헛되어 보내지 않겠다고)

If you make a promise, you should keep it. (약속을 했다면 넌 그걸 지켜야 돼)

He promised not to be late again. (그 사람은 다시는 늦지 않겠다고 약속했어)

You promised me you'd never change. (나한테 약속했잖아. 너 절대 안변하겠다고)

He made a promise to visit me once a week. (그 사람은 일주일에 한번 날 방문하겠다고 약속했어) 

I promised myself I would study more. (더 열심히 공부하기로 나자신한테 약속했어 → 더 열심히 공부하겠다고 마음 먹었어) 

 

A promise is when you make a commitment to someone to do something -- to meet someone at a certain time, to tell the truth, etc.
An oath is a more serious promise (often a legal commitment) to do something. When you take an oath in court, you are promising to tell the truth -- and you can go to jail if you lie in court. A wedding vow is also a form of legal oath, which has consequences if you are dishonorable or break your vows.
