trust 와 believe 의 차이

네이버 검색해서 찾아봤더니 지식인, 블로그의 대다수가 뜻이 모호하게 설명되어 있다.

뉘앙스 어휘 검색은 구글링을 해야 제대로 찾을 수 있다.

The word 'believe' means that we believe someone’s statement, but the word 'trust' means that we believe a person is honest and reliable in general.
Believe is defined as : accept that (something) is true, especially without proof.

trust : firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something

trust 는 사람 자체를 믿는다는 의미이고, believe 는 증거없이 사실이라고 받아들이다(말을 믿는다)는 의미다.

I trust you, so I will loan you $10.
I believe you when you say you’ll pay me back, so I will loan you $10.

위의 두 예문을 보면 명확하게 의미가 이해된다.

I trust him to be an honorable man. (난 믿어 / 그 남자가 정직한 사람이라고)
I believe that he did it for some reason. (난 믿어 / 그가 그걸 했을 거라고 / 어떤 이유때문에 → 무슨 이유가 있어서 했겠지)
I believe in ghosts, so I’m afraid of the dark. (난 유령이라는 존재를 믿어, 그래서 어둠이 두려워)
I believe in god, so I go to church. (난 신이라는 존재를 믿어, 그래서 난 교회에 다녀)
I believe we’ve met before. (난 믿어 / 우리가 전에 어디서 만났다고 → 확실하지는 않지만 전에 만난거 같아요)

I'll just hold hands. You trust me, right? (내가 손만 잠깐 잡을게. 너 나 믿지?)
