other, others, another
가게에 들어갔더니 모자가 달랑 2개가 있다고 가정해보자
There are only two hats in the shop.
I don't like this hat, give me the other one. (이 모자 마음에 안들어요. 나머지 하나 주세요)
* the other it 이라고 하지 않고 the other one 이라고 한 건 같은 종류의 것 하나를 나타내기 때문
나도 알고 상대방도 알고 있으면 the를 사용합니다. "The other" is used when you have only two choices.
하나를 선택했으니 나머지 하나는 서로간에 아는 거죠.
하나라는 명사는 one 이고 다른 것이란 명사는 other 다.
One girl was wearing a white dress. The other girl was wearing a red one.
과일 가게에 사과를 사러 갔더니 사과가 3개 있다.
"사과 하나 주세요" 라고 할 때 Give me an apple.
* a/an 은 '같은 종류의 사물이 여러개 있는 가운데 하나' 인 상황에서 사용
앗 그런데 사과를 보니까 벌레가 먹었네요.
This apple is bad. Give me another one. (이 사과 상태가 나빠요. 다른 사과 주세요)
another 는 나머지 것 중에서 지정하지 않고 아무거나 한개 즉, '또다른 하나' 란 뜻이므로 단수를 사용한다.
* another 는 one more, extra or additional 라는 뜻도 있다.May I have another cup of coffee? (커피 한 잔 더 마셔도 될까요?)
Please give me another chance. (다시 한번 기회를 주세요)
Show me the other apple. (나머지 하나 보여주세요)
There are many apples. One is red, the others are green.
많은 사과가 있는데 하나는 빨간 사과이고, 나머지 전부는 초록 사과다.the others 는 셋 이상에서 나머지 전부를 가리키는 말이다.
* the others 는 셋 이상에서 지정된 것을 뺀 나머지 전부를 가리킨다.
There were three books on my table. One is here. Where are the others ? (or : Where are the other books?)
Some girls were playing soccer. The others were lying in the sun.
some은 one의 복수라고 보면 되는데 정확히 몇명인지는 모른다.
the others 도 몇명인지 정해져 있지는 않다.
Some like baseball, others like soccer. (어떤 사람들은 야구를 좋아하고, 또 어떤사람들은 축구를 좋아한다)
