seem 을 영영사전에서 찾아보면 to appear to be something, or to appear to have a particular quality 라고 나온다.
seem 은 '~인 것 같다. ~같아 보인다' 등으로 해석하는데 객관적인 사실이 아닌 주관적인 느낌을 언급할 때 사용하여 확신할 순 없다는 뉘앙스다.
He is a doctor. (그는 의사다) 는 표현은 100% 객관적인 사실을 언급하는 말이다.
He seems a generous doctor. 처럼 generous 를 같이 써서 주관적인 느낌을 말하고 있다.
She seems excited. (그녀는 설레는 거 같다)
The child seems healthy, but the doctor is concerned. (그 아이는 건강해 보였는데, 의사는 걱정을 했다)
seem 뒤에는 to be 가 오면 보통은 생략하는데
틀림없이 사실이라고 짐작되는 객관적 사실을 언급할 때는 to be를 생략하지 않고 seem to be 로 사용한다.
The bus seems to be full. (버스가 만원인거 같다).
* 버스를 타기전에 보니까 만원처럼 보인다는 것으로 버스를 탔더니 만원이 아닐 수도 있다는 의미입니다.
seem like : ~ 인 듯하다.
It seems like rain. (비가 올 거 같아)
Going out for lunch seemed like a good idea.
